We did another price hop today—and it turned out to be quite the eye-opener. We compared 10 everyday items across Pick n Pay, Checkers, Spar, and Woolworths, making sure to stick to the same quantity or closest equivalent sizes where available. For items like wors, we aimed for 1kg, even if it meant buying 2 x 500g packs to match it up fairly.

And the winner this round? Pick n Pay, hands down. Their No Name brand range made a real difference to the total, especially on basics. Checkers followed fairly closely behind, then Spar, and Woolworths trailed once again.

The real shocker? A Bar One at Woolworths was R2 more expensive than the same size Bar One everywhere else. So much for the “but it’s better quality” argument—same product, same size, more money. Hmm. 👀

Notes on How We Shopped:
To keep things fair, we compared equal sizes or quantities—for example, we “bought” a full 1kg of wors, even if that meant adding up 2 x 500g packs. We also factored in multi-buy deals (like 2-for-1 offers) to determine the true cost of each item.

All prices were checked using an address in Cape Town, and all items were available online or via the supermarkets’ apps, using their respective rewards cards. If an own-brand option was available, we chose that.

Note: Any potential rewards points earned were not included in the final totals and all prices were taken in-store or online on the same day. Specials and availability may vary depending on your region.

We’ll keep doing these comparisons because every week, prices shift—and every rand saved counts. Let us know where you’re finding the best bargains this week in the comments!
