“Sandwich generation” isn’t a term I favor; it feels too frivolous or casual a term for the deeply emotional experience of supporting both elderly parents and grown children. I prefer to think of it as being a “bridge generation”—connecting two ends of the family spectrum.

For older ones in this position, the emotional and financial toll can be significant. Many feel pulled in too many directions, often sacrificing their own well-being. It’s not uncommon for these caregivers to face burnout, as they juggle medical appointments for elderly parents, financial support for adult children, and their own personal needs.

The reality is that this role can feel isolating. Sharing experiences and finding solidarity can make the burden feel lighter. Beyond emotional support, there’s also a need for practical solutions, like accessing financial advice or respite care services. You’re not alone in this journey, and help is out there.

One of the keys to thriving in this role is learning to delegate and prioritize. Caregivers don’t have to do everything themselves; leaning on siblings, adult children, or community resources can make a significant difference. Clear communication and mutual understanding within the family are crucial for managing expectations.

Additionally, governments and organizations must recognize the unique challenges faced by this group and provide targeted support. From subsidized elder care services to financial planning workshops, these initiatives can ease the burden on caregivers and ensure they’re not left to struggle alone.

Are you part of this generation that finds itself supporting both older and younger family members? What challenges do you face, and what has helped you navigate this role?
